Your odds at list price
The chance that the cards you pull are worth more than you paid at the list price (¥200 a pack), opening sealed packs nobody has searched. Only Art Rares and up count, at today's Japanese shop prices; commons and other bulk count as ¥0.
| You open | You pay | Chance to get more back | Typical pull |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 pack | ¥200 | 14% | ¥0 |
| 5 packs | ¥1,000 | 16–17% | ¥320 |
| 10 packs | ¥2,000 | 14% | ¥720 |
| 1 box (30 packs) | ¥6,000 | 8–9% | ¥2,600 |
Why a box is different: a box isn't 30 random packs. Japanese boxes follow a pattern, about 3 Art Rares and 1–2 Super Rares in every box, so a box almost never comes up empty, but whether it beats its ¥6,000 cost depends mostly on an SAR (about one box in 6). That's why the box chance here is lower than for 10 loose packs.
These are estimates: The Pokémon Company doesn't publish pull rates. Rates from opening reports (torecolle, cardchusen); a range means the sources disagree on the SAR rate. Shop prices are asking prices: Pokémon cards actually sell for less (about 60% on Yahoo! Auctions), so treat these as a best case. Typical pull = the median value of what you'd open.
Is a box worth opening?
A box costs ¥12,800 today (Card Rush, 2.1× the ¥6,000 list price). An average box holds about ¥5,303 of Art Rares and up at asking prices: ¥414 back per ¥1,000 spent. Lowest value of the 3 sets below. On average a sealed box returns about 41% of its price, so buying the single card you want is cheaper.
Chase odds: about 1 box in 6 has an SAR; about 1 box in 50 has the Mega Hyper Rare (Mega Rayquaza ex, ¥69,800).
| Set | Box today | Avg box holds | Back per ¥1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Storm Emeralda | ¥12,800 (2.1× list) | ¥5,303 | ¥414 |
| Abyss Eye | ¥9,480 (1.6× list) | ¥3,513–4,438 | ¥371–468 |
| Ninja Spinner | ¥9,480 (1.8× list) | ¥3,723–4,506 | ¥393–475 |
Estimate, same assumptions as the odds above: about 3 Art Rares and 1.5 Super Rares a box, the SAR and Mega Hyper Rare rates from the opening reports, bulk counted as ¥0, each card at its average Japanese shop asking price (cards sell for less, about 60%). Box price: lowest in-stock price today.
