One Piece card foils: every finish and its name

The short answer

In a One Piece booster the rarity decides the finish. Commons (C) and uncommons (UC) are printed plain, while rares (R), super rares (SR) and secret rares (SEC) are foil. The exception is four starter decks, the Ultimate decks ST-10 and ST-13 and the EX decks ST-21 and ST-30: every card in them is foil, commons included. Every other shine is a separate version of the card, with its own name and price. In boosters, the only same-art foil commons and uncommons come from the two premium reprint sets: the Jolly Roger foil in PRB-01 and the Pirate foil in PRB-02.

This post is for a collector holding a shiny common, such as the Mary Geoise (聖地マリージョア) stage card OP05-097, who wants to name its version before pricing or listing it. The shiny copy asked ¥80 at Yuyu-tei (遊々亭) on 12 Oct; the plain one asked ¥30 on 11 Oct. Our earlier guides cover how to identify a One Piece version and how to tell a reprint from the original. This one is about the finish.

The base ladder: rarity sets the finish

A card in an ordinary Japanese booster takes the finish of its rarity (Altema's rarity guide; Bandai's product pages).

RarityFinish in a normal booster
C, UCNot foil (shops write 通常, "regular", or ホロなし, "no holo")
R, SR, SECFoil (ホイル加工, "foil finish")
Every card in ST-10, ST-13, ST-21, ST-30Foil: Bandai says 全カードホロ仕様 ("every card holo") for ST-10 and ST-13; shops list every ST-21 and ST-30 common as キラ / ホロ ("holo")
Commons in the other starter decksNot foil (shops list them without a holo tag)

So yes, regular foil exists: it is the finish of every booster R, SR and SEC, and of every card in those four decks. Portgas.D.Ace ST13-010, a common, is foil in its own ST-13 deck. That is why PRB-02 reprints it twice: once plain (Yuyu-tei tags it ホロなし, "no holo") and once as a Pirate foil. A shiny booster common is one of the versions below.

The versions on top of the ladder

Bandai prints extra versions of one card number. The number stays; the art, the finish and the price change. In our examples the dearest version asks from about 20 times to over 500 times the regular card. Bandai names some versions officially. Japanese shops and TCGplayer name the rest, and they don't always agree.

VersionJapanese nameEnglish nameHow to spot it
Parallelパラレル (Bandai)Alternate Art (TCGplayer)New art, often across the whole card
Super parallelスーパーパラレル (Bandai)Manga (TCGplayer)The card filled with panels from the manga
SP cardスペシャルカード / SPカード (Bandai)SP (TCGplayer)"SP" printed before the card number
Full artフルアートカード (Bandai, PRB-01)Full Art (TCGplayer)The original art stretched across the frame and text box
Textured foil手ざわりが通常カードと異なった特殊加工, "a special finish that feels different from normal cards" (Bandai's description)Textured Foil (TCGplayer)A surface you can feel
Foil-stamped event card箔押しイベントパラレル (Bandai, PRB-02)Foil-Stamped Event Alt-Art (Bandai English); Alternate Art (TCGplayer)A full-art event card with foil stamping
Treasure Rareトレジャーレア, "TR" (Bandai, OP-16)TR (TCGplayer)"TR" in the bottom-right corner
Jolly Roger foil海賊旗フォイル, "pirate-flag foil" (Yuyu-tei)Jolly Roger Foil (TCGplayer)PRB-01 only: a pirate-flag pattern over the whole card
Pirate foilラメフォイル, "glitter foil" (Yuyu-tei)Pirate Foil (TCGplayer)PRB-02 only: a foil pattern that changes with the character

Bandai's own product pages don't name the two reprint foils, in Japanese or in English. Those names come from Yuyu-tei's listings and TCGplayer.

Jolly Roger foil or Pirate foil?

Both names sound like pirate flags, so they get mixed up. TCGplayer keeps them apart. Its PRB-01 group holds 72 "(Jolly Roger Foil)" products (23 C, 25 UC, 20 R, 4 promos) and no Pirate Foil. Its PRB-02 group holds 90 "(Pirate Foil)" products: one for each of the set's 46 commons, 29 uncommons and 15 promos. Yuyu-tei counts the same 72 under 海賊旗フォイル and the same 90 under ラメフォイル.

The patterns differ too. Tier One describes the Jolly Roger foil as a pirate-flag (海賊旗) pattern over the whole card with a map frame. On the Pirate foil, collectors on Reddit describe a motif tied to each character, such as berries on Buggy. We could not check that against Bandai.

PRB-02 also reprints each of those commons as a plain card with the same art, so one number can sit in a shop at three prices. Mary Geoise, with Yuyu-tei's asks:

VersionProductFinishAsk
RegularOP-05Not foil¥30 (11 Oct, cheapest of three shops)
ReprintPRB-02Not foil, same art≈¥30 (11 Oct)
Pirate foilPRB-02Foil, same art¥80 (12 Oct)
ParallelPRB-02Foil, new art≈¥780 (12 Oct)

PRB-01 stacked more versions onto one number. Otama (お玉), uncommon OP01-006, in five of its Japanese versions:

VersionProductFinishAsk
RegularOP-01Not foil¥80 (11 Oct, cheapest of three shops)
Jolly Roger foilPRB-01Foil, same art¥220 (12 Oct)
Full artPRB-01Foil, art across the card¥580 (12 Oct)
ParallelOP-01Foil, new art¥980 (12 Oct)
New-art parallelPRB-01Foil, new art¥1,780 (12 Oct)

The same-art foils add little. Mary Geoise's Pirate foil asks ¥50 more than the plain card; Otama's Jolly Roger foil asks ¥140 more than the OP-01 regular. A new picture is what moves the price: Otama's PRB-01 new-art parallel asks ¥1,780, 22 times the regular.

The top of the range

The biggest prices sit on manga, SP and event versions of cards that were rare to begin with. Three from PRB-02, Yuyu-tei's asks on 12 Oct:

The names in other markets

Bandai's regional sites translate the official names, not the shop names. Its Asia English site says "Alt-Art" and "Super Alt-Art" where the Japanese site says パラレル and スーパーパラレル. Its Korean site says 패러렐 카드 ("parallel card"), and its French site says "cartes parallèles" ("parallel cards") and "version alternative" ("alternative version"). None of these pages names the Jolly Roger or the Pirate foil, so in every market the English TCGplayer names are the ones collectors search for.
