How to identify the exact version of a One Piece card

By CardMochi · 3 October 2026 · 7 min read · prices as of 3 October 2026

The short answer

Work through the card in a fixed order: the language, the small box before the card number, the ★ above the rarity, the background, any gold, then the card's right-hand edge. Each step rules versions in or out, and the last step is to find the exact picture on Bandai's official card list, which names the product it came from. The order matters because the number and rarity alone often can't separate a ¥160 card from a ¥798,000 one.

Our earlier post covered how to tell a reprint from the original and the block icon. This one is the checklist for everything else. For what each rarity letter means, see the rarity guide.

Step 1: is it a Japanese print at all?

Japanese and English cards share card numbers, but Bandai keeps a separate card list per language, and the versions don't line up. Take the Starter Deck Luffy, ST01-012. Bandai's English list has a version filed as ST01-012_p2, with Eiichiro Oda's artwork and English text. The Japanese list has no _p2: it runs from _p1 to _p7 plus a reprint, _r1, and files the Oda artwork under _p3 and _p4.

So a suffix such as "_p2" means nothing until you know which language list it comes from. CardMochi's yen prices are for Japanese prints. We label a version that appears only on the English list "EN only", without a yen price.

Step 2: the box in front of the card number

Look just left of the card number in the bottom-right corner. Most cards have nothing there. Two kinds have a small boxed label:

The box's colour can matter too. Bandai's images of the two SP versions of the OP-09 Shanks in OP-13 show the same artwork, one with a gold SP box and gold lettering, the other in silver. SNKRDUNK identifies the gold one as a "3rd anniversary special card" (3周年スペシャルカード), and Bandai's OP-13 page lists two such cards in the set.

Step 3: the ★ above the rarity

From the fourth booster, OP-04, parallels carry a small ★ above the rarity letter, according to Altema. Before that, you go by the art: Altema says a parallel has illustration across the whole card where the regular SR or SEC has a silver or gold frame.

Don't treat a missing ★ as proof of a regular card. On Bandai's images, the two OP-05 versions of ST01-012 have no star, and neither has the OP-09 Shanks from the English 2nd Anniversary Set (ONE PIECE カードゲーム English 2nd ANNIVERSARY SET), a Japanese-text card that Bandai's Japanese list files as a version of OP09-004. Their artwork gives them away, not the corner.

Step 4: the background

Here the corner stops helping. Altema warns that a super parallel (スーパーパラレル), which collectors call the comic parallel (コミパラ), looks like any other parallel in the corner. The tell is the background: panels from the manga. Bandai's OP-13 product page describes the super parallel the same way, a design "filled entirely" with artwork from the original manga.

Two sets add a colour variant. Torecamap says OP-09 had a gold super parallel, given only to Gol.D.Roger (OP09-118), and OP-13 a red one for Luffy, Ace and Sabo. Bandai's OP-13 page confirms the red super parallel is exclusive to that set. On the official images of OP13-118, the comic parallel has black-and-white manga panels; the red one has the same panels in red, with a gold name.

Step 5: gold on the art

Bandai's OP-05 page announced, for the game's first anniversary, a card drawn by Eiichiro Oda himself. That is ST01-012 again. On the Japanese list it comes twice, both from OP-05: _p3 carries a gold "Eiichiro Oda" signature and gold lettering, while _p4 has the same artwork on a black background with no signature. Look for the signature before anything else on that card.

Step 6: the right-hand edge

Altema says cards handed out at official events read "NOT FOR SALE" on the right-hand edge, and that many promos can't be told apart by rarity alone. The prize version of the OP-05 Rebecca, OP05-091_p3, shows exactly that on Bandai's image: a Championship 2024 logo, a gold frame and "NOT FOR SALE" beside the copyright line. Its corner still reads SR, like the ¥120 regular card.

Step 7: confirm on Bandai's card list

Search the card number on Bandai's Japanese card list and match the picture. Under each version, "入手情報" (where to get it) names the product: a booster, a starter deck, a tournament prize or a magazine offer. The file name of the picture ends in the suffix, _p1, _p2 or _r1. That suffix is how CardMochi tells the versions apart.

How our labels map to versions

CardMochi shows each Japanese version as product · label · finish, such as "OP-05 · Parallel 3 · parallel foil", with the rarity beside it. "Parallel 3" is Bandai's _p3, "Reprint" is _r1, and the product is the one on Bandai's list ("P" for promos). SP and treasure rare versions show "SP CARD" and "TR" as the rarity. We don't yet name comic, red or gold-signature versions as such, so read the label with the picture.

The suffix is a filing number, not a ranking. Parallel 1 of OP13-118 asks ¥12,800; Parallel 3 was last listed at ¥1,280,000.

CardMochi data: the lowest Japanese shop ask we hold for each exact version. Asks without a date are from 3 Oct 2026, and without a shop named are Yuyu-tei's; "out of stock" means the shop's last listed price. Product per version from Bandai's Japanese card list, read 27 Sep and 3 Oct 2026.

Two comparisons make the case. The gold-signature and unsigned Oda cards share the artwork and the product, yet the signed one's last listed ask is 80 times the unsigned one's. And the treasure rare, the only one Bandai lists for OP-16, asks ¥3,480. A scarce version doesn't guarantee a high price; demand for the character still sets that.
