Do Japanese Pokémon boxes beat their list price?
The short answer
Yes, all of them. Of the 74 Japanese Pokémon booster sets we price, none asks less than its official list price, counting the last listed price for the 16 that are sold out. The lowest live multiple is 1.56x and the median set with a live price asks 3.2 times list. Age explains less than you'd think: within 2021 alone the range runs from 2.3x to 16.8x, while the medians for 2023, 2024 and 2025 sit within 0.7x of each other.
We built this from CardMochi's own sealed prices, read from 27 Sep to 3 Oct 2026, against the per-pack list prices The Pokémon Company publishes (希望小売価格). It answers one question for a collector holding, or about to buy, a sealed Japanese box: how far above list do boxes go, and does waiting help?
How we measured it
The measure is today's asking price per pack divided by the official list price per pack. A Mega Brave (メガブレイブ) pack lists at ¥180 and Card Rush asks ¥280 for one, so it sits at 1.56x.
For 20 sets, Card Rush sells single packs in stock, so the price is a real pack. For the rest we take today's box price, from Card Rush or else the lowest SNKRDUNK listing, and divide it by the packs in the box. That's 30 for a standard expansion and 10 for a high-class set. Pokémon Card 151 and six sets with ¥260 to ¥290 packs come in 20-pack boxes, which we checked against shop and official listings. Sixteen sets are sold out, so they carry their last listed price. We keep them in the data but leave them out of the live figures below.
The multiples by release year
Live prices only (58 sets), read 27 Sep to 3 Oct 2026:
| Released | Sets | Median multiple of list | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | 5 | 24.1x | 19.6x to 29.5x |
| 2020 | 4 | 8.4x | 4.1x to 12.0x |
| 2021 | 9 | 6.0x | 2.3x to 16.8x |
| 2022 | 7 | 4.8x | 2.4x to 10.7x |
| 2023 | 11 | 2.5x | 2.1x to 8.6x |
| 2024 | 9 | 2.4x | 2.2x to 6.1x |
| 2025 | 9 | 3.0x | 1.6x to 4.6x |
| 2026 | 4 | 1.7x | 1.6x to 2.1x |
Older sets do ask more, on the medians. But sets from 2023 and 2024 have a lower median than sets from 2025. Twelve of the 20 sets from those two years ask between 2.0x and 2.5x list. Violet ex (バイオレットex), released in January 2023, asks 2.11x. Battle Partners (バトルパートナーズ), two years younger, asks 2.18x.
Only five live sets sit below 2x, and all five are from the current Mega series, released between August 2025 and May 2026: Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia (メガシンフォニア) at 1.56x, Abyss Eye (アビスアイ) at 1.58x, Munikis Zero (ムニキスゼロ) at 1.66x and Ninja Spinner (ニンジャスピナー) at 1.76x.
The outliers carry the averages
The seven highest live multiples, plus the two sets from 2023-24 that broke away:
| Set | Released | List per pack | Asking per pack | Multiple |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Detective Pikachu (名探偵ピカチュウ) | Apr 2019 | ¥220 | ¥6,480 | 29.5x |
| Sky Legend (スカイレジェンド) | Apr 2019 | ¥165 | ¥4,133 (box ¥124,000 ÷ 30) | 25.1x |
| Miracle Twin (ミラクルツイン) | May 2019 | ¥165 | ¥3,980 | 24.1x |
| Remix Bout (リミックスバウト) | Jul 2019 | ¥165 | ¥3,980 | 24.1x |
| Tag All Stars (タッグオールスターズ) | Oct 2019 | ¥550 | ¥10,800 | 19.6x |
| Blue Sky Stream (蒼空ストリーム) | Jul 2021 | ¥165 | ¥2,780 | 16.8x |
| Eevee Heroes (イーブイヒーローズ) | May 2021 | ¥165 | ¥2,480 | 15.0x |
| Pokémon Card 151 (ポケモンカード151) | Jun 2023 | ¥290 | ¥2,480 | 8.6x |
| Super Electric Breaker (超電ブレイカー) | Oct 2024 | ¥180 | ¥1,093 (box ¥32,800 ÷ 30) | 6.1x |
151 and Super Electric Breaker are the only 2023 or 2024 sets above 3.5x. Eevee Heroes and Blue Sky Stream came out one and two-and-a-half months after Silver Lance (白銀のランス), at the same ¥165 list price. Silver Lance asks ¥380 a pack: 2.3x list after more than five years. Same era, same list price, a six- to seven-fold difference in result. Incandescent Arcana (白熱のアルカナ), from 2022, does little better: ¥12,400 for a 20-pack box, 2.4x list after four years.
Put as a yearly rate, the median live set two or more years old has grown 42.5% a year from list. That is nominal, before shipping, fees or storage, and it assumes you paid list. Silver Lance works out at about 17% a year, Blue Sky Stream at about 72%.
Where the box is cheaper than our figure
Our box prices lean on Card Rush, a shop. For 17 boxes we read a Card Rush in-stock price and a SNKRDUNK listing on the same day, 3 Oct. SNKRDUNK's lowest listing was cheaper for all 17, by a median of 14%. Pokémon Card 151, for example, asks ¥49,800 at Card Rush and ¥42,998 on SNKRDUNK. On SNKRDUNK's prices, the box-based multiples here would shrink by about a seventh.
What this means for you
If you can buy at list (a lottery win, a Pokémon Center drop): in our data no set has fallen below list, and the newest sets already ask 1.6x to 2.1x. 30th CELEBRATION went further, faster: its box traded at 3.6x list 16 days after release.
If you're buying a sealed box now: you pay the multiple, and past growth from list isn't your return. A 2023 standard set at 2.2x and a 2025 set at 2.2x cost about the same against list. On these prices, the extra two years haven't moved the older one ahead. The sets that ran, like 151 and Eevee Heroes, already trade at their multiple.
If you're holding to sell: these are asking prices. Across sets, cards on Yahoo! Auctions sell for a median 65% of the shop ask (our study), so price your exit from sold data, not this table. Card Rush asks one of three round prices, ¥11,800, ¥12,400 or ¥12,800, for 14 of the boxes here. That is what a shop charges, not what a buyer will pay you.
If you'd rather open than hold: the best packs to open page compares what each set's top three cards ask against the pack price.
Method and limits
- Prices are Japanese asking prices (what Card Rush or SNKRDUNK charges), not sales. Cards and boxes usually sell below the ask.
- List prices are pokemon-card.com's suggested retail prices per pack, tax included, read 1 Oct 2026. Few buyers of popular sets paid list; release-day market prices were often higher, and we don't have them for most sets.
- Box-derived pack prices assume 30 packs for standard expansions and 10 for high-class sets. We confirmed 20-pack boxes for Battle Region (バトルリージョン), Dark Phantasma (ダークファンタズマ), Pokémon GO, Incandescent Arcana, Black Bolt (ブラックボルト) and White Flare (ホワイトフレア), plus Legendary Heartbeat (伝説の鼓動), which is priced from a single pack. If any other box holds fewer packs than we assume, its multiple is understated here.
- The 16 sold-out sets carry last listed prices, which can be stale in either direction.
- The study covers the 74 sets with both a list price in our data and a sealed price, released from January 2019 to July 2026.
- The yearly rates are compound growth from list to the asking price. They aren't returns anyone earned.
